Are You Interested in a Career at Irving Shipbuilding?

Women Unlimited, in partnership with Irving Shipbuilding, is launching a 14-week Career Exploration Program (CEP) at the NSCC Akerley Campus in March 2017. This CEP pilot program will highlight career paths for women, specifically in the metal trades … Welding and Metal Fabrication. Upon successful completion of this CEP, women may enter the NSCC Welding and Metal Fabrication 2-year diploma programs. As positions become available in 2019 and beyond, Irving Shipbuilding will be hiring successful graduates who meet their employment eligibility criteria.

Who should apply? You, if you are …

  • unemployed, underemployed or working less than 20 hours a week
  • not in school, community college or in a full-time adult-learning program
  • over eighteen years of age
  • entitled to work in Canada
  • someone who is interested in exploring careers in these metal trades
  • someone who has a grade 12 diploma or GED
  • available to attend 14-weeks of full-time programming

During the Career Exploration Program, you will:

  • discover training programs through hands-on workshops
  • engage with industry
  • strengthen your math and technical skills
  • gain certificates in First Aid & CPR, WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety
  • build a portfolio

On-going support and resources will help you:

  • access training in the metal trades
  • network with other women in these fields
  • connect with industry
  • build an on-going support system as you learn and work in these fields
  • address challenges like childcare and transportation

There are 20 seats available for diverse women who are interested in studying and working in the metal trades. There is an application, interview and assessment process to ensure the candidates with the most potential to succeed are chosen. Applications will be reviewed for selection in February and all applicants will be contacted at the end of the process.
