What Cutting Steel Means For Women in Trades

In September, steel was cut at the Halifax Shipyard and Nova Scotia’s Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy has officially begun. But this cutting of steel also represents an opportunity for more women to get involved in shipbuilding trades.

Partnering with Women Unlimited, Irving Shipbuilding is providing educational funding and job opportunities to women studying welding and fabrication at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC).   The partnership is an outcome of Irving Shipbuilding’s Centre of Excellence funding which provides Nova Scotians – specifically under-represented groups - with program and training opportunities  in the marine industry.

This year, 18 women were provided 50 per cent of their tuition funding over the course of four semesters (two years) from Irving Shipbuilding to complete the program at NSCC. Last week, they finished their first semester...
